MEN facing midlife challenges are being called upon to face up to their problems and get their mind and body in shape. A Warwickshire Chartered Psychologist has issued this rallying call to a sector of society, which he claims is totally ignored.
Andrew Bridgewater, a 47-year-old father of two, arranged a unique event attended by 28 mid-life men at Woodland Grange Conference Centre in Leamington Spa on Thursday 10th September 2009, where he shared his fascinating personal story to provide inspiration to other middle-aged men.

Mr Bridgewater said: “It’s worrying that men will spend a lot more time and money looking after their car than themselves. To many the beer belly has been accepted as a badge of honour, but the reality is that even being a stone overweight can dramatically increase stress levels and the risk of serious health problems. Stress is a killer for midlife men.”
Only two years ago Mr Bridgewater was one of the millions of men, who neglected their health, but a moment of realisation changed his life.
“I had a hectic corporate job and was staying at a busy London hotel. I got in the lift and saw a fat, stressed and unhealthy man in there with me. Then I realised there was a four-sided mirror and I was looking at myself! Shocked, I thought I have to do something about this and vowed never to get like this again.”
Using weight loss strategies he had long known about, but never previously put into action he lost more than three stone in weight in three months and the pounds have never returned.
He added: “At 11 stone I have the energy now of a man in his 20s, don’t suffer stress anymore, and I’ve probably added 20 years to my life too. I’ve never felt better and I want others to feel this too. The trouble is that as men we die earlier and neglect our health so much, and society is ready for this change. I have explored the issues and challenges of the male midlife crisis and action needs to be taken for the benefit of society.”
